Gravitational time dilation questions?

I just started reading about gravitational time dilation so I am far from brilliant at it. But from what I understand, time is slower the larger the m of an object is. So is time slower on Jupiter than on an asteroid in the asteroid belt or even our moon? How does time slow in the first place? And doesn't it mean that time is not universal?
