Why is Mahatma Gandhi a transformational leader? Help me for my quiz?

1 and 3 maybe - didn't know he had anything to do with South Africa. But I wonder, can you call someone successful as a "transformational" leader if they didn't achieve their aims in their lifetime and had to become martyrs to their cause and country?
