Lots of groups experienced discrimination--but none were treated, literally, as property and none were subjected to the same Jim Crow laws and overt segregation in jobs, housing, employment, and community life that African Americans were until very recently. This long history of discrimination has had lasting effects on African American families and communities, which affirmative action is, in part, intended to compensate for.
