Why do we have an electoral college system?

Why should each state give one unifying voice and not give each person a voice? It is not true, pure democracy (Obama won the popular vote by 6% but had like twice the electoral votes as McCain). It also caused the Gore-Bush election to be decided by a panel of judges. It isn't democracy!
